The Paicoma Project
With over 1350 students and 59 teachers,
Pacoima is one of the largest elementary schools in Los Angeles
County. It opened in 1915, and its original school bell can still
be heard at the start of each day.
Like most large, urban schools, Pacoima has
its share of problems. But here, something besides "more money"
is being applied to create some solutions. When the Lifespring Foundation
proposed to support the training of an entire school staff, Pacoima
was chosen, making it possible for the administrative and teaching
staffs to attend the Lifespring Basic.
On the following pages several of the graduates
from Pacoima share their thoughts about the Training and how it
affected them as teachers and affected Pacoima as a school. We'd
like to thank each of them for taking the time to share these thoughts
with us.
HERB K., Principal
... allowed defenses to lower and
brought everyone closer together without a fear of judgement from
peers. At this time, we are working together toward the educational
progress of our children.
R. C., Counselor
Lifespring gave me the opportunity to re-examine
my basic values. I get so busy with duties and requirements that
I lose touch with the people that surround my life - my students,
colleagues, family, and myself. It was revealing, refreshing,
and tremendously enjoyable to spend five intensive days to examine
my part in their lives.
JEAN S., Teacher
... It has had a lasting effect as well
because the daily routine seems to flow with a more mellow ease.
I still let my preferences be known, but with less anger than
was necessary before. And when there is anger on their part or
mine, I have a lot more insight into its reason and how to deal
with it productively rather than destructively. In short, for
me, Pacoima Elementary has gone from an unpleasant place to be
to a very pleasant one, a truly vast change.
JANET D., Teacher
... Not only do I feel good about the change
but the people with whom I work feel closer to me and enjoy their
work more.
